Changzhou Vanke Baypark Center | DO Design Group | International Residential Architecture Awards 2022

DO Design Group: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2022. The project is located at the bank of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in the central downtown of Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province. The unique geographical location and the development of the city have brought more imagination for the future exquisite life.

The overall planning adopts an all-point layout, fully considering the problem of lighting, and the maximum building spacing are nearly 100 meters. Every home can enjoy a wide view of the canal. The free and flexible home-returning flow line on the north side guides pedestrians into the community, while the south side forms a mid-axis symmetrical layout. The design uses the division of different areas to resolve the height difference between the higher south side and the lower north side of the plot, and builds a spatial pattern where comfort and sense of ceremony coexist. At the same time, based on the advantages of the original landscape resources, the community planning achieves the maximum use of landscape resources and creates a green urban forest natural lifestyle.

Different from the traditional residential facade form, the design uses the fluidity and load-bearing feeling of water and light and flexible curves to outline a simple and powerful facade. The C-shaped facade gives the building unique artistic creativity with lateral flowing curve changes. The architects paid special attention to the integration of the facade and interior functions as well as the proportion of the volumes and the choice of materials. The combination of dark gray aluminum plates and champagne gold aluminum plates creates a rich and changing texture effect. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the large living room provide residents with a view of the canal, and also give the facade a clear contrast between virtuality and reality.

In terms of the house design, the architects innovatively adopt the staggered skip-floor type and the odd-numbered floors are interchanged with even-numbered floors, so that residents have a “cubic space” of multi-dimensional living experience. The space of each floor of the sky villa (225 square meters) uses the combination of three-dimensional modules to create three split-level hanging courtyards. The 6.2-meter-high living room extends the sky light and cloud shadow infinitely; the visual interface brought by the 270° corner balcony brings unique canal views into the indoor life. The flat floor apartment (169 square meters) creates the concept of shared duplex suites with an innovative and variable living mode to satisfy the functional needs of space and living quality.

With functions such as sales, display and recreation, the community center is located on the north side of the plot, close to the canal. The architects propose the positioning of the “Eye of the Canal” facing the urban interface, making the community center and the historic buildings such as the Canal Site Park and the DaGuanLou face each other from afar and forming visual appeal from multiple perspectives such as viaduct, canal and road. The arc shape, the interesting tour route, the combination of off-white stone and champagne gold aluminum profiles and the black and gray glass curtain wall endow the space with a feature of gentle inclusiveness.
