Platt Street Hotel | Fogarty Finger | World Design Awards 2021

Fogarty Finger: Winner of World Design Awards 2021. Our firm was engaged to design the public spaces and guest room interiors for a new boutique hotel on Platt Street. The 172-room hotel is slated to be completed in early 2022. The hotel’s design pays homage to New York’s storied past through its industrious yet refined aesthetic.

Straddled between the Financial District and historic South Street Seaport, the hotel pulls design influence from its neighborhood context. Drawing on nearby early Art Deco high rises, a strong vertical architectural language rationalizes the double-height lobby while giving a warm, monolithic backdrop to harmonize the various programs of the lobby.

The finer scale of the Seaport with its cobblestone streets, antique brickwork, and industrial metalwork inform the detailing and textures of the public area. This can be seen in the large-scale red marble terrazzo flooring, backlit fluted wood walls, and steel work for the canopy bar and staircase.

The ground floor includes the hotel’s reception, self-check-in kiosks, bar, and retail space all anchored around a central lounge space. The mezzanine and cellar level supplement the ground floor with co-working, conference, and fitness amenities. The public spaces feature a color palette of limestone, deep green, crimson brick, and rust, inspired by impressions of materials within a walk in the neighborhood.

Due to their efficient layouts, the 172 guest rooms were carefully designed to maximize space and functionality. Design elements take cues from yacht interiors with integrated millwork, rounded corners, and reconfigurable storage while indirect, ambient lighting gives the illusion of openness and warmth. Each room is equipped with a foldout desk, a framed television, and an amenity shelf with mini-fridge, safe, and phone/tablet charging stations.
