SUNAC CHINA SOUTHWEST GROUP: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2021. This project is a building that fits the charm of the present-day Rongcheng city and carries the romance of the two Song dynasties, looming in the hinterland of the East Central Ring Road of the main city of Chengdu. The design of the project traces back to the culture of the Song Dynasty, the artisanal architecture, and gardening techniques, and combines the city’s attitude towards life with Sunac’s Chinese product proposition to create an irreplaceable cultural space of Song Dynasty aesthetics, spreading the various interests of life practiced and imagined by the Song people.

The façade design translates Song-style architecture, refining the features of Song architecture by tracing back to the “Building Method”, Song paintings and poems, and combining modern materials and techniques to create an evolutionary design that meets modern values.

The garden design draws on the aesthetics of the Song Dynasty, combining the culture of the “hidden officials” of the Song Dynasty with the “Yi” lifestyle of Chengdu, forming a contemporary hidden experience that integrates external space and internal emotion. The six courtyards and 800 square meters of the landscape-style garden ring are created by taking the green peaks and mountains, pavilions, and houses from the “Green Landscape Scroll”. It combines the natural mood of woods, green hills, and beautiful water with the spiritual meaning of love for landscape and hermits’ happiness, reflecting the landscape tradition of “feasible, desirable, tourable and livable”.

The interior design incorporates the aesthetics of Song life into modern art space, taking the famous “December Market” in Chengdu during the Song Dynasty as a carrier, giving each space a unique symbolic meaning, deconstructing and reconstructing traditional cultural products with modern design techniques, searching for the inner cultural perception of the elegant Song, exploring the classical poetic meaning, showing the dialogue between Song elegance and modern life between things, and shaping the minimalist aesthetics of eclecticism and elegant style.
