Field and Spike | Maison Design & Furniture | World Design Awards 2025

Maison Design & Furniture: Winner of World Design Awards 2025. The retirement home, designed in a modern Chinese style, is conceived from the homeowner’s deep aspirations for their later years. From the outset, the designer focused on two key elements—serenity and comfort—using natural materials and warm hues to create an inviting atmosphere that provides both mental relaxation and practical convenience for daily living. The interplay of wood textures and stone patterns emphasizes refinement and cultural depth, crafting a retreat that blends traditional decorum with contemporary functionality. This design echoes the homeowner’s ideal of “returning to simplicity” in retirement.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTIONDIFFERENTIATION    [Modern Chinese Aesthetics]
The residence is defined by a modern Chinese style, where the abundant use of solid wood veneer and warm-toned stone exudes a refined, tranquil beauty. At the entrance, a gold-foiled flowing sand screen serves as the highlight, seamlessly blending traditional motifs with modern craftsmanship to create an artistic and inviting welcome. The stone TV wall, finished with a gradient layering technique, provides a rich look, while the indirect lighting in the social area enhances the overall quality. In the corridor, slanted lighting and crisp linear elements, combined with wood accents, create an aesthetic that is both classic and futuristic. [Retirement Home]
Focusing on the strength of family bonds, the design emphasizes both functionality and comfort. The third-floor leisure area integrates a bar, gym, tea room, and KTV room, forming an essential venue for the homeowner to host friends and family. A thoughtfully placed fireplace offers warmth during cold seasons, symbolizing the joyous moments of gathering together. Large windows fill the space with abundant natural light, ensuring that the homeowner enjoys a bright and pleasant residence in retirement, all while being able to appreciate the scenic rural views outside.
PRODUCTION OR REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY (AND MATERIALS)           The project makes extensive use of natural stone and high-quality wood veneer to establish a warm and gentle base tone throughout the space. The interplay of wood and stone textures across floors, walls, and cabinetry creates a rich layering of natural elements and harmony. To accentuate focal areas, handcrafted gold-foiled screens and metal accents were strategically incorporated, lending the design an extra touch of refinement. The overall color scheme, centered on earthy tones and extended into gray scales and warm whites, not only echoes the understated sophistication of modern Chinese aesthetics but also provides a relaxed, elegant visual comfort.
SPECIFICATIONS / DIMENSIONS / PACKAGE / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES        The site spans approximately 495.8 square meters, with three floors ingeniously segmented to cater to both interactive and private needs. On the first floor, an open-plan living room and master bedroom create a spacious, bright area. The second floor is devoted to the private area, featuring rooms for the children and a guest room. The third floor focuses on leisure and entertainment, housing a gym, bar, tea room, and KTV—providing a versatile setting for gatherings with family and friends. With a vertically integrated layout, the design ensures that whether family members reside together or guests visit, everyone can enjoy smooth circulation and engaging interactions throughout the space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTIONFUNCTION       The homeowner couldn’t stop praising the home—now not only a place to enjoy tea and entertain guests, but also a haven where they can appreciate the lush greenery outside. They especially admired the elegant modern Chinese aesthetic and the thoughtfully designed leisure areas. The effective use of natural light, expansive windows that promote natural ventilation, and the application of low-VOC materials and durable floor tiles all align perfectly with the homeowner’s vision for a future-proof lifestyle. Visitors were equally impressed by the exquisite craftsmanship of the gold-foiled flowing sand screen and the stone TV wall, which together highlight the home’s unique, lasting beauty and functionality.
