Hefei Grand Mansion Residential Project | HZS | International Residential Architecture Awards 2024

HZS: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2024. Located in an emerging area of urban development in Hefei, the project sees the bustling new town collide with the mountains and streams behind it. The harmonious relationship created in contrast is the continuation and respect to the city and nature, and is also the starting point of the design of this project.

There are urban roads to the west of the site and a nature park to the east. Based on the characteristics of the site, the design uses the layout of courtyard space and traffic nodes to dissolve the height difference of the site and create an independent and interconnected courtyard space. The residential buildings are arranged around the courtyards, while the curtain end hall maximally introduces the view of the landscape into the interior space. While responding to the landscape, the design of the garden axis is also the focus. The grey space verandas and open landscape nodes in each functional space continue the street culture of traditional life, and the contrast between urban human life and natural paradise is transformed here. The new urban order written in the context of nature allows the memory of nature to be preserved and continued.

The simple and smooth architectural lines respond to the urban context and maintain the harmony and unity of the urban interface. The dialogue between the space and function of the open elevated floor and the pan club is a response to the concept of natural residence. A coherent design language is used to rationally divide the architectural form, and the hollow and solid contrast of different materials and the serialized facade system present a new and harmonious architectural order.

The choice of building materials is particularly restrained. The light gray stone with natural texture tries to dissolve the old-fashioned impression of real estate architecture with rich layers of lightness under the outline of warm grey matte metal in a low-key color. A large number of facade lines are presented with deep cracks from natural stone, the beveled surfaces of stone and metal express a richer and more delicate readability under the characterization of natural light and shadow, the change of time and angle allows the power of architecture to slowly become stronger and stimulates more vitality in the daily life of the city. Adhering to the design concept of environmental protection and sustainable development and the China’s green building one star standard, the project introduces sponge city and prefabricated construction technology, and adopts rainwater recycling system and intelligent service system to create a low-carbon and healthy community facing the future.
