Zhejiang Dairui Soft Decoration Design Co.,LTD: Winner of World Design Awards 2025. This project takes inspiration from Gulangyu Island, a UNESCO World Heritage site, reimagining its architectural soul as a contemporary sanctuary in Xiamen Island. Blending Southern Fujian’s cultural heritage with Nanyang (Southeast Asian) influences, the design team meticulously studied Gulangyu’s historic structures, distilling their spatial rhythm and ornamental details into a modern language. The result is an elevated living space that honors tradition while embracing today’s lifestyle.

Where Tradition Meets Modernity
Rather than replicating the past, the design reinterprets it. Guided by a “cosmopolitan spirit,” it fuses Minnan craftsmanship—mother-of-pearl inlays, bead embroidery, patterned tiles—with Nanyang-European elements like arched forms, intricate moldings, and stained glass. The open layout and minimalist volumes act as a canvas for these cultural touches, while custom details—handmade tiles, wrought-iron balustrades, and shimmering mother-of-pearl feature walls—subtly echo Gulangyu’s timeless elegance.

Innovation in Craft: Mother-of-Pearl Reborn
A defining highlight is the groundbreaking use of traditional mother-of-pearl inlay at an architectural scale. Delicate shells—white butterfly, luminescent clam—are fashioned into abstract waves and Minnan floral motifs, gracing walls and furnishings. Beyond solving technical challenges of adapting ancient techniques, this art form lends organic radiance and artisanal depth, transforming the space into a cultural statement and a collectible masterpiece.

A Living Tribute to Gulangyu
The residence unfolds as a microcosm of Gulangyu: layered with history yet effortlessly modern. Each detail whispers of cross-cultural exchanges between Minnan and Nanyang, inviting dwellers to experience both refined comfort and the island’s poetic serenity.
