JIANGXI FUZHOU DOUBLETREE BY HILTON | Palmer and Turner Consultants (Shanghai) Ltd. | World Design Awards 2024

Palmer and Turner Consultants (Shanghai) Ltd.: Winner of World Design Awards 2024. The project is located on the city’s central axis with the City Hall building overlooking the entire axis and buildings. The main entrance of the hotel is aligned with the central axis. The circular design of the main entrance canopy with centre hollowed out creating an open courtyard filled with natural light, reflecting the ancient Chinese philosophy of “Heaven is round and Earth is square” and “Four waters return to the hall” and echoing the circular elements of the Celebrity Sculpture Park to the north.

The overall layout of the project draws on the essence of traditional villages in Fuzhou, where people live between the mountains and the water and are in harmony with the sky and the earth, which is a complete embodiment of the art form of “letting nature run its course”. Linchuan has been full of celebrities and flourishing literary style since ancient times. The project takes the academy as the design intention to not only express the cultural characteristics of Fuzhou, but also provide a peaceful place in the modern busy city life, which is in line with the hotel’s design concept. In addition, the project main tone is based on the traditional Linchuan architecture with white walls and grey tiles, surrounded by mountains and water, the fusion of architecture and nature, forming an integrated architectural environment, creating a sense of privacy and nobility.

The main entrance of the hotel is located on the north side of the site, and the arc-shaped entrance building forms a plaza, which, combined with the exquisite landscape design, reflects the design concept of a home away from home. The entrance lobby opens up to the central courtyard. The central garden is an organic combination of small hills, water features and pools, which is the best expression of the Chinese tradition of “Ren Shan Zhi Shui”. Between the supporting function area of the hotel on the east side and the guest room building on the west side, and between the guest room building and the guest room building, they are connected by modern Chinese-style corridors, and the proper design of the corridors achieves the effect of enjoying the garden with different views. The courtyard at the entrance of the guest room building is carefully designed to give guests a strong sense of “home”, and the guest room logistics service site is located on the west and north sides of the guest room building to minimise interference with the residents. The planned green space rate of the site reaches 49.3%, and the setting of a large courtyard between the guest rooms achieves a view from the window of each room and ensures the privacy of the guests.

The façade design combines the concept of modern Chinese style with the idea of green energy saving. The façade of the north side of the building mainly adopts stone and grille, the stone gives people a feeling of noble atmosphere, and the grille gives people a feeling of the softness and connotation of Chinese architecture. The main functional space adopts large full height glazing, which fully integrates the outdoor landscape elements into the interior and produces a resonant sense of beauty. The guest rooms borrow horizontal elements to weaken the height of the building, combined with the use of vertical grilles to provide a comfortable and pleasant scale and sense of view. The rich roof shape with staggered heights further enhances the quality of the project through large areas of greenery and Chinese landscaping in Chinese gardens.
