Muxarabi House | Paula Aveiro Arquitetos | International Residential Architecture Awards 2025

Paula Aveiro Arquitetos: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2025. Muxarabi House reinterprets the relationship between interior and exterior through a carefully curated interplay of light, materiality and spatial continuity. The project is grounded in a warm, tactile palette – light-toned wood, travertine navona and sandy neutrals – employed to craft a welcoming yet refined domestic landscape for a family that values hosting, sharing and living in fluid, interconnected spaces.

At the core of the project is the muxarabi panel, which unfolds along the hall, staircase and living room, establishing both a defining identity and a continuous visual thread between the two floors. On the ground level, kitchen, dining and living areas form a seamless open plan, while the gourmet area extends outward through large retractable glazing that fully dissolves the boundary between inside and out. A planted green wall reinforces this gesture, stretching sightlines and enhancing the perception of openness. Concealed doors and structural glass that frames the staircase as a sculptural element, together with light-toned joinery and uninterrupted surface treatments, contribute to a clean, fluid reading of the interiors — an architecture that is discreet in expression yet visually compelling.

On the upper floor, each bedroom was conceived with its own distinct atmosphere. The girl’s room features a soft palette of greens, blues and warm accents, evoking the freshness and calmness of a garden and shaping a serene, inviting setting. The boy’s room draws on nautical cues and prioritizes an open central area for play, maintaining a direct connection to the terrace. The shared bathroom balances pink and blue atop a terrazzo floor, introducing a youthful and contemporary character. In the primary suite, the project’s natural palette reappears through linen textiles, light wood and a textured wallcovering that enhances the sense of comfort; the en-suite bathroom, fully clad and illuminated by a skylight, delivers a sensorial bathing experience defined by the entry of natural light.

Throughout the residence, every design decision reinforces a sense of natural ease and comfort, weaving together subtle rusticity, functionality and a clear visual identity. From the full integration of the social areas to the careful handling of textures, tones and detailing, Casa Muxarabi articulates an architecture that nurtures well-being, encourages shared living and strengthens the relationship with its immediate surroundings — a reflection of the intention to create living spaces that are vibrant, emotional and attuned to contemporary ways of inhabiting.
