Qingdao Baiyue Mansion Residential Project | HZS | International Residential Architecture Awards 2025

HZS: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2025. This project, located in the core area of Laoshan District, Qingdao, enjoys an extremely advantageous geographical location. It offers a panoramic view of the bustling city and allows one to enjoy the beauty of the blue sea and green mountains up close. Here, humans can communicate with the sea and demonstrate respect and continuity for both the city and nature, and this is also the purpose of the design of this project.

The southern side of the site faces the Hong Kong East Road and enjoys convenient transportation, the northeastern side is close to the Dashi Temple scenic area in the Wushan Mountain range, and the southern side is only 700 meters away from the coastline and backed by the Wushan Mountain while facing the Yellow Sea. It boasts excellent views, and the numerous parks and scenic spots surrounding it provide residents with spaces for rest and relaxation.

The cluster-based planning layout form showcases a shared central landscape enclosed by six residential buildings, and together with the sight corridor, achieves infiltration into the urban interface. The layout of the buildings is arranged according to the terrain, aiming to create a diverse and layered urban skyline. The buildings on the northeastern side give way to create a setback space at the street corner, thereby forming a public open space for the city.

The project simulates the flowing form of natural landscapes to create the distinctive entrance image of the community. The community lobby is ingeniously linked with the underground club and the sunken courtyard based on the terrain elevation difference, achieving a perfect response to the concept of natural residence. It not only needs to respond to the landscape but also needs to pay attention to the design of the garden’s main axis. Open landscape nodes are arranged in various functional spaces as embellishments, and the new urban order is written in the context of nature. Thus, the memories about nature can be preserved and continued.

The facade design of the residential building themed on the sea transforms the natural symbol of ripples into design language. Every line showcases either calm or surging waves. The simple and smooth architectural lines depict the dynamic sense of the facade and respond to the urban context, maintaining the harmony and unity of the urban interface. It demonstrates the city’s spirit of the times with contemporary architectural trends. The virtual-real comparison of different materials and the serialized facade system present a completely new, non-reproducible and harmonious architectural order.

When it comes to the selection of building materials, the project mainly uses grey stone with natural textures and clear glass. The understated grey and champagne-colored metallic accents, combined with the dark green luxury stones in the key areas, create a rich and layered effect. By emphasizing the extensibility of vertical lines and the virtual-real comparison of horizontal materials, the design combines light and shadow changes with three-dimensional layers to create a distinctive urban landmark. The meticulous material selection and technological innovation achieve an organic unity of the artistic, functional and durable characteristics of the building facade, and realize compatibility with the trend of green and intelligent city construction. Based on the environmental protection and sustainable development design concept and the China green building two-star standard, the project introduces building technologies such as sponge cities and prefabrication, sets up a rainwater recycling and utilization system, and adopts an intelligent service system, so as to create a low-carbon and healthy community for the future.
