SHANTI | Shanghai PTArchitects | International Residential Architecture Awards 2024
Shanghai PTArchitects: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2024. SHANTI is a residential development located in Taocheng District, Hengshui City, Hebei Province, an area with convenient transportation and comprehensive facilities. Within approximately 3.1-mile radius, the community is surrounded by schools, hospitals, shopping centers, and parks. Guided by the design philosophy of “people-centered,” the project aims to create an efficient, intelligent, eco-friendly, and comfortable living environment. By optimizing community amenities, ecological landscapes, and transportation systems, SHANTI aspires to establish a high-quality, sustainable residential community.
Master Plan
The project adopts a symmetrical layout and a progressive spatial arrangement, featuring a central axis design that integrates landscape flow and functional zoning. The multi-tiered landscape system connects pedestrian pathways with public green spaces, combining hard and soft landscaping into a cohesive network. Public green spaces account for no less than 10% of the total residential area, including a central green park. This layered landscape offers diverse spatial experiences, meeting residents’ needs for walking, exercise, and leisure.
In terms of public facilities, the project integrates public buildings with commercial zones, offering essential services such as a property management office, kindergarten, cultural activity room, underground swimming pool, and public restrooms. These facilities are strategically positioned within a reasonable service radius to meet daily community needs.
Transportation and Municipal Infrastructure
The project implements a fully pedestrian-vehicle separation system. Surface areas are reserved for temporary non-motorized vehicle parking only. The main community entrance is located on the east side, allowing vehicles direct access to the underground parking garage, ensuring smooth traffic flow. Pedestrian entrances are dispersed across the site for convenient access.
The underground space includes a one-level parking garage, offering ample parking spaces, along with storage rooms, utility spaces, and a swimming pool, providing residents with a convenient and comfortable living experience. A fire lane encircles the residential buildings, with fire control zones and evacuation routes designed in accordance with fire safety regulations, ensuring comprehensive safety measures.
Material and Façade Design
The architectural façade blends modern and neo-Chinese aesthetics, featuring warm tones. The primary material is white textured paint, complemented by champagne and gray metallic finishes. This vibrant yet harmonious color scheme exudes cultural confidence and modern sophistication. Innovative material display installations, aligned with utility model patents, enhance the project’s uniqueness and practicality.
Innovative Unit Design
The project employs an interlaced L-shaped structural system, where adjacent floor slabs maintain fixed heights and are connected through vertical walls to form multiple staggered L-shaped units. This design enhances the spatial hierarchy and optimizes natural lighting. Without altering the overall building height or number of floors, each unit benefits from enhanced vertical space, significantly improving the living experience.
Sustainability and Environmental Considerations
SHANTI integrates the “sponge city” concept, employing advanced green building technologies. The project features solar water heating systems, rainwater harvesting, integrated thermal insulation systems, and prefabricated construction techniques. These energy-efficient measures comply with the latest sustainability standards, effectively reducing the project’s environmental footprint and promoting sustainable development in residential architecture.
