Hebei Ngreen Architectural Design Co., Ltd.: Winner of Architect of the Year Awards 2024. The site is located in the first ring of Shijiazhuang, which is the former coal mine machinery factory in 1960s. As factories moved out of the city center, the industrial buildings inside the plant were abandoned. This renovation practise is carried out on the basis of retaining six old plants. The design first cleaned the paint and stains on the red brick wall, and then strengthened the structure of the main building, increased insulation and other measures to extend the life cycle. At the same time, it partially implanted modern context and gived the building contemporary expression.

1# plant retains the original main structure, using steel structure to form a space with partially two stories, enrich the interior space. The east auxiliary building in poor condition was demolished and updated into a glass curtain wall facade, forming a contrast between the old and new. Open space is arranged along the middle of the building, and an open corridor connects with the 3# plant on the north side, so that visitors can enrich the spatial experience. The west side gives way to the alley type corridor, and according to the needs of the industrial exhibition hall, a cylindrical exhibition hall is added into the old factory building to form the southwest corner open space. The function of cultural activity center is designed inside the building, and spaces such as Shijiazhuang Industrial Culture Exhibition Hall, library and art exchange are arranged here to realize the transformation of the plant to cultural function.

2# plant dismantled the east brick and concrete auxiliary building and reconstructed it with glass curtain wall, colorful glass, metal curtain wall and other modern architectural languages, forming a strong contrast with the red brick of the old workshop. The integrated design of the south colonnade of the construction responded with a small volume building to retain the sense of scale of the building, and formed a new and old image contrast with the 1# plant on the east side, jointly creating the main axis light and shadow corridor block. Give the building new life. Using the advantage of the height, the internal space organization of the workshop is sorted out, and sports functions such as basketball court, badminton, table tennis and tennis are set up.

3# plant retains the external wall of the building, and removes and rebuilds the location with security risks, which not only retains the historical style, but also satisfies the new functional implantation. Hall 3# and Hall 1# are connected through the corridor, and open terraces and spiral stairs are set on the second floor to enhance people’s viewing experience. In the interior, new and dynamic business forms and functions such as situational commerce and life aesthetic collection are implanted to create an internal composite block full of interest and rich spatial levels. The main building of the 4# and 5# plant is relatively complete, and the building adopts the form of large space to meet the functions of catering, market, and youth activities. The east and west side auxiliary buildings are changed into large spaces with steel structure, and the ceramic panels are used to echo the original red brick walls.

The public space planning adopts the spatial reconstruction method to transform the external space of the building into a square open to the city, effectively dredging the traffic around the area and forming a new dynamic gathering area. Part of the plant is opened to form a colonnade or gray space, enhancing the connection between the workshop and forming a new spatial experience. It integrated into the plant equestrian show, cute pet park, parent-child lawn, star square, million dance set, food beauty set, light collection and other diversified and multi-scene theme facilities.
