Suzhou Xiangyu Tianyu Dongfang Club | Bluemoon Design | International Residential Architecture Awards 2024
Bluemoon Design: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2024. “Engage in a dialogue between renewal and nostalgia with the era’s civilization, seeking a spiritual stronghold beyond the mundane, within the city.”
Xietang Ancient Street, dating back to the late Qing Dynasty, flourished with the construction of dams, attracting merchants and shops alike. Its rich Jiangnan water town charm and economic development epitomize the historical evolution of Suzhou. The unique layout of “waterways and land routes running parallel, with rivers adjacent to streets” bears a culture of diversity and fusion, shaping Suzhou’s gentle and reserved water-town temperament. The Xietang Ancient Street shaped its historical appearance in the past; today, its planned reconstruction not only delves deeply into its historical evolution and local customs but also embodies Suzhou’s spirit of seeking breakthroughs from within.
Bluemoon Design blends the concepts of a clubhouse and art gallery, allowing the connotation of the relationship between interior design and architecture to continue. At the same time, using architecture as a medium, it expands and reshapes the interior space, integrating Gusu’s local culture and unique elements, blending tradition with modernity, innovating spatial artistry, and constructing a contemporary aesthetic experience center full of cultural and artistic senses.
Taking the design theme of “Abundance of Gold and Jade,” we skillfully integrate four types of flowers: osmanthus, magnolia, pomegranate, and begonia, forming a delicate floral arrangement. The yellow golden osmanthus and white magnolia are planted opposite each other, symbolizing gold and jade; while the pomegranate symbolizes fertility. and with the addition of the begonia tree, it becomes “Golden Hall.”
The soft decoration divides the overall space of the club into four major spatial areas. The first floor features a reception area (Gold ▪ Osmanthus — Quiet and Elegant), while the basement level includes a water bar area, a negotiation area (Jade ▪ Magnolia — Elegant and Pure), a VIP room, a golf room, a book bar area (Fullness ▪ Pomegranate — Prosperous and Rich), a fitness area, and a swimming pool area (Hall ▪ Begonia — Gentle and Unrestrained).
The floral imagery design permeates the entire space, using different material expression techniques to create a sense of hierarchy and atmosphere in the space through proportional segmentation, collage, and combination. Each piece echoes the overall artistry and cultural ambiance, including the floral arrangements, decorations, and large furniture in the space, all complementing the venue. Large floor-to-ceiling windows allow natural light and scenery from outside to easily intervene, creating subtle interactions with the delicate material sensations. This constructs a scene with a strong sense of design and modernity, endowing the space with a unique artistic beauty, and conveying a serene and profound atmosphere.
