Tranquil Moon | Suitable Interior Decoration Design | World Design Awards 2024

Suitable Interior Decoration Design: Runner-up of World Design Awards 2024. The site is an old apartment. The owner desires a space that can comfortably accommodate the needs of a family, provide a healthy environment for their children to grow, and also capture the beauty of natural sunlight. The designer chose a Scandinavian theme as the foundation. The project embodies the parents’ love and care for their children, translating it into the softest curves, transforming them into tangible elements within the home. The details are thoughtfully designed with the safety and educational needs of the children in mind, creating a space that gently embraces the family, offering comfort and warmth to their hearts.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTIONDIFFERENTIATIONMoonlit Arcs      After refining the layering of the walls, the designer used low-saturation color blocks as the base and employed arcs to connect the entire space. The TV wall features a white oval cabinet with wooden shelves. This layered design gives the TV wall a vivid and striking look. The arc extends to the boundary of the private area, symbolizing a path illuminated by the moon, guiding the way home.   Solid and Void      Beyond the arcs, the project achieves a interplay of solid and void through openness and reduction. Despite the small area, the designer leveraged the advantage of the high ceiling, using open shelving to create a sense of lightness while providing storage functionality. The bathroom door is equipped with specialized hardware, featuring a push-to-open mechanism that minimizes the space wasted by the door’s swing, resulting in a cleaner and more streamlined look.
PRODUCTION OR REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY (AND MATERIALS)The materials used in the project include eco-friendly paint, hexagonal tiles, laminate flooring, wood veneers, system panels, artificial stone, mirrors, magnetic blackboard film, and artistic paint.         The color scheme is based on Morandi tones, with large areas of low-saturation grays, greens, and whites set against a white backdrop. The balanced palette creates a comfortable atmosphere that aligns perfectly with the rhythm of the family’s life. The open shelves feature wood grain to add a touch of warmth, while warm yellow lighting is used as an accent, achieving an ideal balance between cool and warm tones.
SPECIFICATIONS / DIMENSIONS / PACKAGE / TECHNICAL PROPERTIESThe site is a nearly 30-year-old apartment with a total area of 57.1 square meters, featuring two rooms, a living room, and a dining room. The designer retained the advantage of the high ceiling, leaving it undecorated. Beams were used to create curves, subtly suggesting pathways. The previously enclosed kitchen was converted into an open plan, with the addition of an kitchen island. The redesign opened up the kitchen, allowing unobstructed light from both the front and rear balconies, thereby enhancing the overall brightness.
CHALLENGEThe main challenge lies in the condition of the apartment. The old building has issues with pest infestations and bathroom leaks. Additionally, the bathroom is situated between two bedrooms, making it crucial to address the leakage problem thoroughly. If not properly handled, the water could spread to the adjacent bedrooms, severely affecting the comfort of the living space. From the outset, the designer dedicated significant effort to repairing the foundational work, addressing these defects, and enhancing health and safety measures to ensure that the family members can enjoy a comfortable living environment.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTIONFUNCTION       The residents expressed a high level of satisfaction with the project, particularly appreciating the efficient use of space. For example, the transformation of the kitchen from an enclosed area to an open plan with a kitchen island significantly enhanced the visual connection within the space. The design of the bathroom door also struck a balance between aesthetics and functionality. Additionally, the planning of the educational area demonstrated thoughtful attention to detail, such as rounding off sharp edges to greatly reduce the risk of injury for children. The wall along the walkway is covered with blackboard material, enriching educational functionality.
FORM“A crescent moon cradled by moonlight, holding within it the beauty.”      Home is a sanctuary, a safe haven in life’s journey. The space is designed with the parents’ hopes in mind, aspiring for their children to grow up healthy in a secure and worry-free environment. The love within the family is like gentle moonlight—never too intense or overwhelming, but a calm, serene silver glow that softly illuminates every corner of the children’s lives.      Guided by this design philosophy, each space has been meticulously planned to meet the practical needs of the family while evoking emotional resonance. The transformation of the kitchen from an enclosed area to an open plan makes the space look expansive and creates more opportunities for family interaction. It allows the joy and warmth of cooking to be shared. Curves envelop natural light, and the soft color palette provides a place of solace for the soul. The joyful educational space becomes a source of shared memories for the entire family. Home is not just a place to live, it is a refuge of love and learning.
RESEARCH ABSTRACTThe site is an old apartment, and the project is named “Tranquil Moon,” inspired by the residents’ aspirations for the space. As educators, the parents wished for a home that fosters health and intellectual growth for their children. To meet the homeowners’ expectations, the designer not only completed the essential renovations and functional upgrades but also employed design techniques like openness and reduction to enhance natural lighting. After carefully configuring the space to meet various functional needs, customized storage solutions were created, seamlessly integrating the dimensions of existing furniture. The result is a vibrant and dynamic Scandinavian-style home that exudes a warm and inviting family atmosphere.      The designer took Scandinavian style as the foundation, incorporating arcs and low-saturation elements into the ceiling, floor, and walls. The parents’ love is symbolically transformed into moonlight. The curved shape of the TV wall and the rounded edges of the beams and columns emphasize the moon as the highlight. The areas blend seamlessly, softened by the moonlight, creating a gentle and cozy home.
IMPACT /SUSTAINABILITYThe selection of materials for this project was made with great care. Eco-friendly materials were used throughout the entire space, with attention given to low-VOC materials to ensure air quality and promote the healthy growth of children. The design avoided excessive decoration, effectively reducing dust pollution during construction. In terms of the layout, the transformation of the kitchen into an open plan allowed unobstructed light from the front and rear balconies, significantly enhancing the brightness of the social area. For private area, such as the master bedroom, the designer concealed the windows based on considerations of feng shui and functionality to improve sleep quality. However, the windows can still be opened when needed, allowing light and air to flow freely.      Moreover, the overall layout is remarkably straightforward, with a clear cross-axis delineating the areas. Whether transitioning from the entrance to the private areas or from the living room to the kitchen, the design carefully avoids any obstructions, ensuring uninterrupted airflow and greatly enhancing the comfort of the residence.
