HZS: Winner of World Design Awards 2025. The project land is located on the Wai Lingding Island in Dangan Town in the Wanshan Marine Development Pilot Zone in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province. The island is small but very beautiful, the mountains here are not high but full of charm, and the clear water and the strange shape of the stones impress people deeply. With excellent island resources, the island can customize top-level and personalized scarce island resort hotels for high-end customers, young groups and family customers, leading the luxury boutique resort hotel market in the Greater Bay Area and gradually forming a high-end holiday resort with island resort hotel characteristics in Zhuhai.

In the context of China’s rapid economic development, the development of resort hotels shows a multi-level and personalized development trend, and high-end consumers are increasingly pursuing top landscape resources and top physical and mental experience. The result is an elegant, Zen hotel building that follows the laws of the natural environment, which features returning to nature and integrating into nature, so that holidaymakers can escape the noise of the city and enjoy the Zen and peaceful nature. It will truly become the benchmark and leader of top boutique resort hotels. On the whole, the architecture uses modern and simple methods to present simplicity, nature and artistry, and reconstructs poetry with Oriental Zen aesthetics, highlighting the calmness and luxury of Oriental temperament.

The uniqueness of the site helps generate the personalized design language of the building, and the personalized language brings unique architectural temperament, thus the natural and concise characteristics are undoubtedly revealed. As a newcomer, it looks as if it has always been a part of the island. People can enjoy the clear blue water, the red coral on the bottom of the sea, the smooth and hard granite reefs formed by thousands of years of wind and waves in the South China Sea, the acacia trees stand proudly in the wind, and the profound sea transportation history with its back to the mainland and its face to the southern coastal areas. All of these are reflected in the architectural design, the buildings that restored the damaged natural grounds stand on a ridge overlooking the vast South China Sea, recalling the sails of the merchant ships over thousands of years. The ubiquitous curves and mottled painted stone walls are as calm and mellow as a reef. The boat, sea, stone and tree are the purest local elements, and based on the awe to the site, they are redesigned and combined to appear more concise, elegant, rustic and luxurious.

Due to its location on an island, the project must deal with terrain with a wide range of elevation differences. Each functional area of the building orderly follows the terrain to ensure that every location enjoys endless views of the sea. There are a large number of large stones in the site, out of respect for the principles of nature, under the premise of ensuring safety, the building incorporates stone elements into the design to truly achieve the integration of architecture and nature.

The overall design concept of the building follows the principles of the natural environment and unfolds in accordance with the terrain. With the help of craftsmanship and original landform, the design cleverly uses the on-site rocks and trees as well as the technique of “learning from nature” to integrate the building into the natural environment, and strives to build the hotel into a high-end boutique hotel hidden between the mountains and the sea. The project adopts harmless building materials and local materials, and the selection, construction, operation and maintenance of materials realize the effective use of resources.
