Yang Ying Design Studio of China Construction Fifth Engineering Bureau Co.,ltd: Winner of World Design Awards 2024. This project consists of the City Entrance and the Landscape Leisure Trail. It connects the Lansheng Station with Fenghuang City, providing a convenient way of access for mountain city tourism transportation with cultural sensitivity, which is open, fair and entertaining.

The design is a light-intervention and micro- renovation. Built according to the terrain and protecting the nature, the space is arranged through elevators, escalators and trail platforms. Methods of vertical, oblique and folding are used to make a combination of free-flowing linear spaces, gradually lifted and balances the height difference of 70 meters. The platforms are placed at the highest point, which can be used differently according to the seasons and tourist periods, forming a situational space for multi-angle viewing, and offering public facilities with flexibility and adaptability to the city.

The platforms and trails are steel structures, using hollow hot-dip galvanized grid plates and metal tie rods. They are connected to ground in a point-like manner, suspended above the mountain in a highly permeable form. While ensuring safety and stability, it allows rainwater to penetrate easily, maximizing the protection for the existing ecological environment.

The City Entrance is a micro-renovation of a five-story residential building. The original structure and elements such as bricks, tiles and window lattices are retained. The facade is repaired with glass in a window-like method, which not only protects the original texture, but also promotes the sustainable recycling of urban resources, providing a new path for urban renewal with social responsibility and spatial inclusiveness.

The transformation prototype of the City Entrance is the five-story “Huayuan Residence” next to Jinping Road. Considering the foundation of the newly added elevator, we demolished a small part of the west side of the original unit and then set up the elevator according to the original area to ensure the landing of the elevator.

In view of the ecology protection for the mountain, the trails and platforms are made of renewable steel, which effectively reduces carbon emissions. The point support and the perforated material with low maintenance requirements reduce the shading and damage to the original vegetation.
