GUOHUA FINANCIAL CENTER | Kris Lin International Design | World Design Awards 2024

Kris Lin International Design: Runner-Up of World Design Awards 2024. This project is a shared public space design in an office building, located on the 18th floor of a tower in North Bund, Shanghai, offering magnificent views of the Lujiazui financial and trade area. Considering its unique landmark status, it draws inspiration from art sculptures, seamlessly integrating with architectural design to create a shared space that combines functions such as shared meeting rooms, a coffee bar, and an art hall. The project aims to become a landmark of the city, breaking the boundaries of traditional office spaces and providing an environment that inspires creativity, vitality, and social interaction for employees.

2.Idea

Taking inspiration from sculpture and integrating it with the architectural design language, we aim to create a unique shared space. The use of angular lines divides the space extensively, resembling a sculpture and presenting a rich texture and intricate layers, akin to a “canyon.” This design breaks away from the traditional office setting, providing a source of inspiration and social interaction for individuals, fostering an environment that stimulates energy and social engagement.

3.Form

We aspire to break away from the traditional office environment by merging angular art elements with smart office systems, creating a shared workspace infused with art and social ambiance. Particularly, in the triple-height atrium on the southwest side of the project, we utilize a mirrored stainless steel ceiling and a main fiber optic art installation to extend the space infinitely, enhancing its artistic qualities. Large LED screens emit gentle light in the evening, forming a landmark art showcase.

4.Function
The interior space is divided into irregular polyhedron shapes, following the concept of sculpture and creating an ultra-modern and sci-fi atmosphere. The art hall can be utilized for exhibitions and event sharing sessions. The coffee bar promotes social interaction and enriches interpersonal relationships. Various levels of meeting rooms are set up, and the extensive use of ultra-clear glass walls minimizes physical partitions, enhancing space efficiency and adaptability. This creates a meeting environment that combines aesthetics with diverse sharing.

5.Differentiation

We have reimagined the functionality of traditional office spaces by creating a multifunctional shared office environment that includes various levels of meeting rooms and open communication spaces, breaking away from the traditional closed cubicle offices. Additionally, we have allocated more space for an art lobby and a coffee bar, providing venues for hosting various social events, thus creating a vibrant and creative shared office environment for the entire building.

6.Impact  In the traditional office model, spaces are often cramped and enclosed. However, with our adoption of the shared office concept, we have enhanced the versatility of the space. It goes beyond the confines of cubicles, promoting an open office model that facilitates the formation of closer-knit work communities throughout the entire building. Additionally, our leisure areas, coffee bars, and art hall serve as venues for hosting various social events such as project sharing sessions, experience exchange meetings, and group learning sessions. This fosters innovation, knowledge sharing, and injects vitality into the space.
