Mohanad Barakat: Winner of Architect of the Year Awards 2024. Red Fan shells inspired design, combining smooth curved lines the natural shape of the desert’s sand ripples and dunes as well as the shell’s own structure. The result is a contemporary architectural building that deploys aesthetic. The seashell shape was chosen to symbolize the ancient art of fishing, as the State of Qatar was one of the first fishing nations in the past, where this profession was its lifeblood.

Bin Ghanem Island, located on the eastern coast of the State of Qatar, was famous in the past for the ancient art of pearl diving and for the production of crimson dye (extracted from seashells), where 2.9 million red to dark red dye-producing shells were discovered.

Sand dunes, sculpted by the relentless force of wind exhibit captivating curved lines that undulate across their surfaces. These sinuous contours, formed through the dynamic interaction of air currents with loose sand particles, create mesmerizing patterns that shift and evolve over time. Carried by the wind, grains of sand dance along the dune’s slopes, gradually shaping and reshaping its silhouette.This natural process of erosion and deposition leaves behind a striking testament to the enduring influence of wind on the landscape, manifesting in the graceful curves that define sand dunes.
