Luonan Basin Paleolithic Museum | Shaanxi Tongji Architectural Design Civil Engineering Co.,Ltd. | World Design Awards 2024

Shaanxi Tongji Architectural Design Civil Engineering Co.,Ltd.: Winner of World Design Awards 2024. This project takes “Luonan raw stone” as the cultural support and image source to extract the modelling features of “unearthed stone” densely distributed along the Luohe River – straight lines, sharp angles and yellowish-brown skin shells. The building of this project takes the stone as the bone and the river as the blood to create the overall image of “one belt, five stones and two courtyards”. A winding streamer connects five paleolithic stones scattered on both sides of the streamer to create an architectural space, and the paleolithic stones sleeping for many years on the edge of the Luohe River once again bloom the glory of culture.

This project draws inspiration from the Luonan paleolith to extract triangular elements for cutting. The facade mainly adopts light gray art concrete exterior wall cladding with ultra-high toughness and high stability, which together with tempered glass show the solemn sense and long history of the Paleolithic Museum architecture.

The architectural layout is integrated with the landscape, and the courtyards are in the nature, creating the concept of “coexistence with the beautiful landscape, showing the charm of the long history”. The whole building consists of entrance lobby, comprehensive service hall, souvenir shop, temporary exhibition hall, immersive exhibition hall, administrative office and paleolithic research center, collection library, corridor exhibition hall, technical equipment room, etc. These functional spaces are closely linked by a corridor shaped like a ribbon, symbolizing the endless flow of the Luo River.

The entrance to the building, which is located on the calm water, can be accessed through three platforms. This design breaks the single traffic line of traditional museums, and closely integrates the visitor flow line and the landscape, so that visitors can experience fun while watching the exhibition.

When people see the first powerful and vigorous “stone” that looks at the Huashilang site in the distance, they come to the museum’s majestic lobby. Located in the foyer, there is a vibrant open lecture theatre with a wide view overlooking the Luohe River. When people pass through the lobby and the glass gallery, they can see the ruins outside, exposing themselves to the strong atmosphere of the paleolithic culture of Luonan Basin. The exhibition hall takes the historical process of paleolithic discovery as a clue to highlight the paleolithic science popularization and research achievements of Luonan history and culture.
