Nantong Qidong Kefeng Factory Renovation Design | RUF Architects | World Design Awards 2024

RUF Architects: Winner of World Design Awards 2024. The project aims to create a distinctive and popular building that will attract more visitors to the area and revitalize it. The building consists of the north part and the south part. On the north side there is a five-story office space about 35 meters wide and 14 meters long, which is equipped with an underground space that receives light through a sunken courtyard. On the south side there is a two-story building with a width of about 35 meters and a length of about 25 meters. It is equipped with a light-filled courtyard space, which is planned to function as a private club. Lobby, reception and exhibition spaces are arranged on the first floor, while kitchen, balcony, fitness and meeting spaces are arranged on the second floor, the south side and the north side of the building achieve connection through the corridor.

Based on the characteristics of the site itself, the design presents a unique scheme from three perspectives: the past, the present and the future. The old villages and towns surrounded by bamboo forests are represented by imitation bamboo facades cast in situ by bamboo models. With the development of society and the strengthening of industrialization, fair-faced concrete is used to present the original beauty of buildings. The pursuit of the spirit of the future is particularly important, and the architects integrate circular elements into the design to balance the cold feeling of straight lines. Round windows, curved stairs and other elements not only bring soft light and smooth lines, but also give people a sense of peace and harmony. The perfect integration of past, present and future is bound to attract a large number of visitors.

The exposed and delicate texture of bare concrete are used by architects to express the passage of time and the simplicity of industry in an uncarved state. On this basis, the imitation bamboo texture is introduced, and the bamboo formwork concreting gives the walls and columns a fine, bamboo-like texture, bringing natural softness and ecological breath to the hard space. The bamboo texture not only enriches the visual level, but also brings a touch of oriental Zen.

The combination of fair-faced concrete and bamboo formwork cement pouring is an innovative construction technology, which realizes the perfect integration of the industrial texture of fair-faced concrete and the natural texture of bamboo, creating a modern and natural aesthetic architectural surface. This technology can ensure ecological and environmental protection, and has the advantages of moisture and water resistance, easy construction and so on. The production process of bamboo formwork fair-faced concrete is as follows: pour the specially prepared concrete raw materials and aggregates into a bamboo mold, and the surface will show the texture of bamboo after the solidification of concrete and the removal of the mold. As for the construction process, the production process of the bamboo formwork fair-faced concrete slab involves nailing bamboo pieces on the large formwork, forming a stable support system through the internal and external steel pipe scaffolding, and creating a decorative effect after pouring.
