ORIENTAL COURTYARD | HZS | International Residential Architecture Awards 2024

HZS: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2024. ORIENTAL COURTYARD, located in Niaixi Village, Cuigezhuang Township, Chaoyang District, Beijing, is only 2km from Qingheying Station, northern section of Line 17, and about 20 minutes’ drive from Wangjing SOHO. Its east side is only 1.5 km away from the Beijing-Chengde Expressway, and enjoys various and convenient transportation modes. The project deeply explores and inherits the local culture, activates the place to give the product a sense of value, and combines architecture and landscape to create a multi-sensory experience of modern Song style aesthetics.

In terms of planning and design, the project draws on the theories and techniques of royal landscape painting to present the ultimate landscape idea and space aesthetics of the Song Dynasty and create a natural living experience of “five senses and six perceptions”. As for landscape design, based on the reference of landscape painting techniques of the Song Dynasty, ORIENTAL COURTYARD constructs contemporary landscape based on the “Xi Yuan Ya Ji” and forms a unique experience that can be experienced and viewed. When people walk into the garden, they can see the mountains, and each family can enjoy the water features. The key nodes are designed with special stones and specially selected ancient trees, offering wonderful views throughout the year.

The details of the facade design refer to the construction practices in The Yingzao Fashi. The “five rooms and six rows” form, rare and precious stone and large-scale custom floor-to-ceiling glass highlight the beauty of symmetry and relaxation. The roof displays the style of the “nine ridge hall”, and the lifting and folding technique forms a graceful and smooth curve profile, making the building appear light and vivid. The classical cultural symbols of the Song dynasty, such as hanging fish, eaves forehead, kite tail and bracket, are used to restore the elegant rhyme of the Song Dynasty and highlight the house etiquette of contemporary elite. The triangular area located on the left and right sides of the double-pitched roof plays a good decorative role, and the hanging fish under the area is full of smart beauty, while the bracket treatment under the eaves brings simple and orderly shape. The details under the windows draw on the mullion windows of the Song Dynasty, and the modern approach interprets the light and delicate beauty and design of the traditional windows. It echoes the roof structure, enriches the facade expression, and fills the building with the style and characteristics of the Song Dynasty.

The housing type design mainly focuses on the 280-square-meter overlapping villa products, and strives to create a pure low-density villa community, while the multiple landscapes bring the ultimate poetic living experience to the owners. At the same time, the project uses an area of 8.5 square meters of customized large plate glass to make large floor-to-ceiling windows, which is far beyond the market standard, ensuring the lighting and quality of each household.
