Shougang Park Urban Weaving District | Lead8 | World Design Awards 2021
Lead8: Winner of World Design Awards 2021. Shougang Park Urban Weaving District is a high-profile mixed-use urban regeneration masterplan that will form a gateway to welcome visitors to the 2022 Winter Olympics site in Beijing. The project represents the opportunity to herald a new benchmark for regeneration in the city.
The masterplan forms part of a significant rejuvenation undertaking in the capital as the site transforms a 100-year-old Capital Steel Factory Park into a thriving multi-activity destination. Comprising retail, office, hotel, entertainment, public transport interchange (PTI), and MICE, the scheme is targeting high-tech firms as future tenants. Once complete, the project is set to become a future flagship transit-oriented development (TOD) in the city’s new Shougang North District.
The development is located above the new metro interchange station of M11 and R1 in Shougang.
Echoing the government’s initiatives to regenerate the Shougang District, the masterplan will preserve the original urban fabric and rebuild the historic buildings while retaining the industrial remains’ authenticity. This includes the reuse of existing heritage columns and brickwork. Lead8’s placemaking strategy will see nature, landscape, culture and technology integrated across the 938,000 sqm development.
Urban Regeneration and Placemaking
- Culture Regeneration
The scheme focuses on promoting development with cultural protection and utilisation. For industrial heritage, energy can be preserved, and industrial heritage can be retained. The design fully excavates the historical, cultural, and contemporary value of industrial heritage. The industrial cultural context of the factory area inherits the characteristic landscape of “mountain-water-industry”. - Regeneration of Industrial Heritage
As the gateway to Winter Olympics, the scheme undertakes “sports+”, technological innovation, cultural creativity and high-end business and financial industries, and create a new highland for the development of Jingxi where high-end international talents and innovative talents gather. Consumption and new entertainment are combined to shape creative cultural experience and consumption districts. - Ecological Regeneration
Designed to meet the 3-Star Green Building standard, Shougang Park Urban Weaving District will be one of the most iconic mixed-use and urban regeneration masterplans in the region.
4. Vitality Rejuvenation
With the human-centric approach, the design adheres to co-construction, co-governance and sharing, paying attention to small-scale vital spaces, strengthening the public openness of the plot, and building a human-oriented transportation demonstration area with public transportation priority and slow traffic priority, making Shougang a highlight of the capital’s historical characteristics and cultural vitality. A new landmark shared by citizens.
Transit-oriented Approach
Benefiting from a transit-oriented approach, the architectural design directly integrates five metro line exits from the underground interchange station. The well-planned pedestrian network maximises circulation across the development and seamlessly connects the entire Shougang Park below-ground, at ground level and above-ground on multiple floors. As part of this design, each factory building features a themed atrium connecting B1 to L2 and exposes the interior detailing of the historic structures.
The development is currently under construction and will complete in 2022.
