Jianxue Architecture and Engineering Design Institute Co.,Ltd. / CCCC Urban Investment (Hangzhou) Co.,Ltd.: Winner of World Design Awards 2024. This project is located in Linping District, Hangzhou, national economic and technological Development Zone. The project is surrounded by residential areas, the north side is an elevated road, and the primary school in the project is located on the north side of the kindergarten. The total construction area of the primary school is 59,800 square meters with a design capacity of 48 classes, and the total construction area of the kindergarten is 6,000 square meters with a design capacity of 12 classes. The project is currently under construction.

At the beginning of the design, we reached a consensus: we should meet the needs of children of different ages and different personalities to create a diversified environment. Children need a free dream space, which we can achieve through explorative activity venues and colorful building facades; Older children need a flexible and orderly school, we need to consider more flexible teaching space and natural education space, broaden the connotation of learning, and increase the interest of school life.

In terms of architectural imagery, we consider primary schools and kindergartens as a whole. The Song Dynasty monk Dao Qian once wrote a poem “In May, Linping mountain road, numerous lotus flowers filled Tingzhou”, the famous Song Dynasty poet Su Dongpo greatly appreciated this, and called Linping “lotus flower island”, so far there are many place names related to lotus in Linping, such as Lotus pond, Lotus flower Street, Tingzhou Road. On the other hand, the Song Dynasty poet Yang Wanli’s poem, “The little lotus is showing its sharp horns, and there are dragonflies standing on the top”, is also often used by Chinese people to describe young and talented children.

Therefore, we choose “lotus” as a design element to explore the inherent attraction between the site and culture, and create a landmark building with geo-culture. The overall building layout is like a lotus flower swaying in the wind, and the enclosed courtyard space is like dew on the lotus leaves. In terms of sustainable design, we designed a series of measures based on Hangzhou’s climate characteristics to create an ultra-low energy green campus. Including: roof garden, photovoltaic integrated roof, summer shading design, classroom north and south side lighting design, sponge city landscape design, etc.
