JZFZ Architectural Design Co. Ltd: Winner of World Design Awards 2024. Located in Nanheng District of Guiyang City, this renovation project is an important part of constructing Guiyang’s urban context system of “one river, one road and two areas”. It is the concrete practice of promoting the renovation and upgrading of Jiaxiu Cuiwei area in Nanming District and gathering forces to create a “charm city parlor”, and it is also an important part of Nanming District to build a continuous characteristic demonstration area of urban renewal. Based on the urban industrial upgrading and the change of new economy consumption structure, the design reshapes the urban space, reproduces the vitality of the city, inherits the regional context, retains the urban memory, and uses cultural creativity to lead the urban renewal, creating a characteristic historical district with cultural heritage and vitality innovation.

1. Preservation and activation of the Number One Scholar culture

The Cao Zhuangyuan district was named after the Zhuangyuan mansion built by the martial arts Number One Scholar Cao Weicheng. From the very beginning, the design focuses on preserving and recreating the historical and cultural heritage. It fully investigates the cultural attributes of the area and launches the design story line based on the history of Dai Yunshan Villa, Wang Boqun’s former residence, Cao Weicheng’s former residence site and Grand South Gate historical city wall system, and reconstructs the historical memory of the area from multiple perspectives such as architecture, landscape and visual guidance.

2. The improvement of courtyard quality and the exploration of block level micro-renewal

In the past development, the original courtyards in the Nanheng area were invaded and destroyed by various forms of buildings in different periods, forming a messy urban interface. The reconstruction of the block adopts the renewal path from street to community. The reconstruction of the block texture and the deepening of the block scale bring the restoration of the facade texture of the historic block and pleasant walking space, thus transmitting the spirit of urban renewal to every corner of the area and providing a physically feasible way for the exploration of the micro-renewal of the block facade.

• Design Highlights

The urban design creates the country’s first martial arts Number One Scholar IP diversified display area based on scheme and strategy. It focuses on the positioning of “one corridor, double core, four blocks, twelve landscapes” and “one garden”, “four blocks”, “one lane” and “seventeen courtyards” to create the new cultural and creative experience street, the new wine and drink experience street, the new dining experience street and the new romance and marriage experience street, bringing a cultural leisure, creative and experience demonstration site integrating the Number One Scholar culture and wine and drink culture.

Besides, it rebuilds the largest cultural protection block in Guiyang with design. This is the project involving the largest scope of renovation, the most intensive cultural protection buildings, and the largest number of renovation households in Guiyang, focusing on the protection of historical buildings and humanistic care for the community. It activates the Number One Scholar culture on the basis of improving the quality of the community, realizing the harmonious coexistence of history and modernity. As for material use, architects explore a new model of “light construction” with local bamboo and steel materials. The project focuses on low-carbon environmental protection and sustainable construction, and uses new technologies to process Guizhou’s unique bamboo into bamboo steel for application, exploring a new model of green and low-carbon renovation.
