Wanhan Vanke Meteropolis | RUF Architects | International Residential Architecture Awards 2024
RUF Architects: Winner of International Residential Architecture Awards 2024. The project is on the golden cross axis of the “political, economic and humanistic artery” in the old city center of Wuchang District, Wuhan. At the same time, the surrounding interface of the plot is complex, the north side is the railway station, the south and west side are the car repair factories, and the south side is Wuhan University of Technology and the South Lake. The site is irregular wedge-shaped, small and narrow. Architects hope to alleviate the pressure of high-density and high-capacity land, accommodate the original lifestyle of the old downtown, and create a model of small-plot, high-density urban renewal settlement.
The design highlights its value with the excellent resources of multiple landscapes. The southeast side of the site is a park and waterscape with lush trees and high vegetation quality; The south campus has a large number of planned green spaces and low-density public landmarks. The project is 2.5 kilometer away from the South Lake, the lake view and large green space can be seen at 50 meters high, and the lake view is expanded from 75 to 150 meters high. Therefore, in the evaluation of landscape value, the residential buildings in high areas is good for distant view, and the residential buildings in low areas is good for close view. Through the precise analysis of the surrounding interface, the scheme is dominated by super high-rise, staggered arrangement, and towards the lake. Inside the plot, a huge central garden of over 10,000 square meters is designed, with an east-west width of about 300 meter and a north-south distance of about 60 meter, forming a real community in the park.
The design language facade modeling abandons classical and obsolete decoration, and adopts imitation stone texture, metal and glass to form a group of modern light luxury expressions in neutral style. The skyline is scattered, the subtle changes in the cold and warm of the main materials, and the combination of different roof shapes bring the elegant sense of order in modern architecture to the city. In its simple and symmetrical modeling, the horizontal lines are separated by the vertical frame with golden proportion, forming a highly recognizable facade texture, showing architectural aesthetics. The south side is light and transparent, eliminating the sense of volume and highlighting the environmental characteristics.
The building top adopts the local heightening technique and the use of glass curtain wall to show the scattered aesthetics, which is highly indicative and forms the city skyline with visual tension. The overall tone uses light color, stretch lines. The clear, bright volume moves freely in the daylight, giving people the impression of elegance and luxury, making the building both public property and quality assurance.
Besides, 8000 square meters of commercials and 12 classes of kindergarten are set up along the street of the project. Architects hope that in the future, the bustling streets will be filled with ordinary marketplace atmosphere, and the quiet living space will be filled with warm neighborhood relations.
