BIAD: Runner-up of World Design Awards 2024. XingHuaDongLi Neighboring Courtyard Market is a community service facility designed for an old neighborhood in Beijing’s Daxing District. The core design intent is to re-establish the relationship between building and community, aiming for the market to serve as a central hub rather than just an isolated structure. The design strategy approaches the market as an environment, providing outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor spaces to extend the community’s daily life. The architectural layout respects the original spatial hierarchy of the neighborhood, making subtle adjustments to blend seamlessly with the existing environment while encouraging new interactions.

Through in-depth research on traditional market spaces and an understanding of the site’s characteristics, the market’s functions were carefully segmented. Different functional areas were allocated to spaces of varying scales, with rectangular volumes placed linearly to form open or semi-open courtyards. These courtyards not only evoke the traditional Beijing “courtyard” concept but also introduce natural light and ventilation, creating a more comfortable atmosphere for residents. The soft boundary treatment allows the new market to integrate naturally into the old community, offering more participatory spaces for residents.
The roof design is another key feature of the project. In traditional markets, the roof often covers vibrant activities below. Here, the roof responds to the different scales of the market’s spaces through a continuous folded ridge design. This creates a dynamic roof form that maintains spatial continuity while harmonizing with the surrounding residences. The interplay of the roof, courtyards, and functional spaces crafts a rich and varied market scene, where the everyday life of the community can continue and thrive.
