Bright Rhythm | Danny Wang space design | World Design Awards 2024
Danny Wang space design: Winner of World Design Awards 2024. The site, originally an office in an old building, needed to be transformed back into a residence, which was the designers’ primary task. After carefully reconfiguring the layout and circulation, the original look of the space was restored under natural light. In the bright and open area, elements like leather, wood grain, and rattan subtly enhance the leisurely atmosphere, reflecting the passage of sunlight. The scene evokes the image of tea leaves unfurling in hot milk—steamy and fragrant. The designer used layered color schemes to amplify the residents’ sensory experience, immersing them in a sense of happiness.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION/DIFFERENTIATION | To transform the previously unsuitable layout into a livable space, the designer relied on professional expertise. The first step was determining the location of the living room. Noticing the potential to connect the front and rear balconies, the designer created an open-plan social area. At the same time, he addressed the challenge of asymmetrical ceiling beams, which could cause visual pressure or distract focus. To solve this, the designer cleverly reshaped the beams, allowing light to flow smoothly along the curves into different areas, defining boundaries, and eliminating the awkwardness caused by the beams. In addition to redesigning the social area, the designer meticulously planned the bathroom. The dry and wet areas feature two distinct flooring patterns: a 1/3 staggered layout for an orderly effect, and a herringbone design. Long gold tiles frame the area, highlighting the shower zone’s elegance. The designer chose this labor-intensive technique because he recognized that the bathroom benefits from ample natural light, making it the perfect spot for residents to relax. |
PRODUCTION OR REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY (AND MATERIALS) | Materials: Modular cabinets, metal elements, imported tiles, thin tiles, rattan, eco-friendly latex paint, glass, and more. The color scheme is based on the natural hues of the materials. Tea-colored wood grain and woven rattan dominate the lower portion of the space, creating the primary visual focus. For the upper half, lighter shades of paint were chosen to harmonize with the overall design. This contrast between the darker and lighter sections strikes a perfect balance, ensuring the visual focus remains clear. The use of metal accents, glass, and strategic lighting adds refined details, enhancing the space’s sophistication. |
SPECIFICATIONS / DIMENSIONS / PACKAGE / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES | The apartment spans 122.3 square meters, and the original layout was divided into four rooms. In the early stages, the designer removed all partitions to create an open, uncluttered interior. To accommodate a family of two adults and one child, the designer then reconfigured the space into a suitable three-room layout, optimizing the use of the area. A walk-in closet was added to the master bedroom, significantly enhancing the functionality and meeting the practical needs of the family. |
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION/FUNCTION | The family is satisfied with the project. Originally designed for office use, the layout was cramped and narrow, with electrical wiring altered to meet office needs, making it unsuitable for living. After the designer reconfigured the wiring, the space became much more suitable for a home. A walk-in closet was added to the master bedroom, and a lift-up cabinet was installed in the kitchen, greatly enhancing storage functionality. Whether it’s the subtle details or the more apparent aesthetic design, the family is thoroughly pleased with the outcome. |
